Dr. Douglas Presentation at St Hughs College

Dr. Christopher Douglas had a paper accepted at the British Society for 18th Century Studies Annual Conference, held at Saint Hugh’s College Oxford University in Oxford, England.  The conference is January 3rd-5th, and he will be the panel’s first presenter. The British Society for 18th Century Studies is the largest society of 18th-century culture, history, art, and literature in England, and its annual conference is the largest conference on 18th-century subjects held annually in Europe. Dr. Douglas will be presenting a paper on the 1799 American novel Ormond; or, the Secret Witness by Charles Brockton Brown, examining the ways in which many of the novel’s women are objectified by looking at the way in which an object is brought up close to the level of the subject, so the ways in which categories of person and nonperson are being confused or the lines are being broken down between personal and non-personal text.
