Study Abroad Opportunities Winter 2022

Students interested in traveling to London, Australia, or Dublin in December 2022-January 2023 should check out the course offerings with CCSA (Cooperative Center for Study Abroad). JSU is a member of this consortium, which means that JSU students and faculty participate in the programs. For example, for the London Winter program, Barbara Cook is teaching a history course on the Tudors, and Staci Stone is teaching an English course on Gothic literature. On this program, students spend two weeks in London in a hotel and visit sites connected to the course content. The class meetings usually occur on site at museums, castles, cemeteries, etc.

“The main text for my London course will be Dracula, and we will visit locations mentioned in the novel, as well as the theatre where Stoker worked,” said Stone. “But my literature students’ favorite excursion is usually the Harry Potter Studio Tour, and I plan to include that destination for this course on the Gothic.”

Cook’s history course will immerse students in Tudor history from the moment they enter London. “It will be an exciting adventure for students to visit the palaces, parks, and gardens where the infamous Tudor Kings and Queens lived, loved, and died. The Tower of London, Big Ben, Windsor Castle, Hampton Court . . . the list goes on and on,” said Cook.

The program also offers courses in journalism, theatre, business, nursing, and more. While professors from other consortium schools teach these courses, they are still open to JSU students.

During winter break, CCSA also offers students an opportunity to study in Australia. This program features courses in biology and anthropology/sociology. Students in the biology course have an opportunity to swim with turtles at the Great Barrier Reef, observe kangaroos in the wild, hike in the tropical rainforests in Queensland, and more.

Spring 2023 Study Abroad Programs

Students interested in studying abroad for a semester still have time to apply for programs in Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates. On a semester-long program, students usually live on campus and take courses at one of JSU’s partner institutions. Spending four months in another country means that students are able to acquire language skills and immerse themselves in another culture.

“Living and studying in another country is a life-changing experience,” said Javier Burrows, Interim Coordinator of the International House and Study Abroad. “Experiencing another way of life expands your knowledge and helps you truly see humanity in the best ways.”

Burrows studied abroad as an undergraduate student at Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea.
