Student Spotlight: Sierra Tolhurst

Sierra Tolhurst, a sophomore from Enterprise, is majoring in Music Education. She was recently named a winner in the national Delta Omicron Solo Artist Competition.

When did you know that JSU was the right school for you?

I knew JSU was the right choice when I came for my band audition. I loved the campus and the mountain views, and all the people I met were so nice.

What are some benefits of your major?

 A benefit of Music Education is getting to meet so many talented people and forming lifelong connections/friendships.

What is your favorite thing about JSU?

The Marching Southerners

What clubs/organizations are you involved in?

JSU Chamber Winds, Marching Southerners, Delta Omicron International Music Fraternity, and I’m a Freshman Forum alumna.

Do you have any recent accomplishments that you wish to share?

I just won first place in the Annual Fine Arts BIPOC Competition. I was also just invited to play at my fraternity’s (Delta Omicron) national conference in July.

What is one way that you have grown during your time at JSU?

I’ve come out of my shell since being at JSU; I used to be super shy but now I put myself out there a bit more.

What is your favorite course that you have taken?

My favorite course is probably Theory IV with Dr. Gordan.

What do you plan to do after you graduate?

I plan to go to graduate school for performance after I graduate.

What is a fun fact about yourself?

I was born and raised in Alberta, Canada.

What advice do you have for first-year students?

Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!
